Apple might be working on Dual-SIM functionality for its iPhones

According to the new patent filing, Apple might be working on Dual-SIM functionality for its iPhones. Apple has been the only major handset brand that has not yet housed dual-SIM functionality on its phones, but the report suggests this may change soon.

According to the Forbes report company’s two patent filings in China and the US hints that the tech giant may launch a dual-SIM phone in upcoming future. The report point at a document filed with China’s State Intellectual Property Office that says that a dual-Sim card feature in iPhone would let the users have two mobile numbers in a single device. The reports further added that the Apple filed this report in March this year and published earlier in September. The filing further reveals the originator as Li Su who is a Principal Architect for cellular software at Apple.

Other than China, the patent is also reported to file in the US. In fact, Apple was approved dual-SIM functionality patent in the US last week. The patent describes that some mobile phones have the ability to use multiple SIMS which allows the users to maintain different wireless service like, one for personal and one for business use.

 

At this moment, it isn’t comprehensible whether the tech giant will launch the dual-SIM enabled iPhone in the upcoming future. Taking into account that the company sells its phones in most countries in partnership with telecom carriers, the addition of dual-SIM functionality may out Apple’s relation with telecom carriers at risk. There are chances that the tech giant may launch a dual-SIM iPhone only in selected market including India and China where majority smartphones available comes with dual-SIM functionality. Notably, the company sometimes obtain the patent for functionality and never uses it on devices. So, we will have to wait and see whether Apple is indeed planning on launching a dual-SIM phone in the future
