The Swedish telecom technology provider Ericsson announced its 5G plugins launched by Ericsson driven software today. It clearly aimed at boosting adoption of 5G services. The Ericsson plug-ins bring flexible 5G to the existing network while improving operators mobile broadband. Ericsson believes that the 5g subscription will commence in 2020, and it is expected to be even faster than 4G.

This new software is going to impact both consumers and industries. There are new applications and cases for 5G which includes safe, self-driving cars, remote controlled robots, haptic feedback enabled and fixed wireless access for residential homes claimed the company.

Sony Ericsson not alone in this 5G project. 20 settled mobile operators worldwide are working on this 5G project with Sony. They are collectively working on 5G networking and use cases including 5G field trials this year.

Radio systems support the Ericsson’s 5G plug-ins. It specifically focuses on the capabilities that operators can leverage within a current network to facilitate the evolution of 5G.

These plug-ins include- massive MIMO plug-in which is a combination of single-user MIMO (SU-MIMO) and beams forming supported by advanced antennas with a large number of steerable ports. It improves both the experience of both users and the capacity of networks.

Then it has multi-user MIMO plug-in which builds on massive MIMO, and the multi-user-MIMO transmits the data to multiple user devices using the same time and frequency resources and coordinates beam forming. The user experience is enhancing, and the network capacity is also increasing. Not only this, reduction is seen in the interference if any.

Then comes RA, virtualization plug-in which improves the network efficiency and performance by enabling virtual network functions (VNF) to be centralized on a common platform and it supports both 4G and 5G.

Then there is intelligent connectivity plug-in where 4G and 5G coverage areas overlap. This connectivity plugin facilitates the network to robustly hold and route the data based on the application requirements and network resource availability. It also increases the combined data throughout 4G and 5g resources.

The last one is latency reduction plug-in this plug-in shortens the access procedures and modifies the frame structure to enable network access and more frequent transmission. It also reduces time content while allowing real-time communications for 5G.

So basically there are five plug-ins. The plug-ins are available for operator trials which are starting in 2016, and it will be available for commercial networking which starts from 2017.
